What to Expect at Your Baby's First Osteopathy Visit

Bringing a new baby anywhere can feel like a lot. You're packing the diaper bag, timing feeds, and hoping for a nap in the car. So if you're thinking about booking your baby in with an osteopath, it helps to know exactly what the visit looks like before you walk in the door.

Here's what a first visit for a baby at Steady Point in Dunnville usually involves.

Why parents bring their babies in

Parents often come to us after a long or difficult birth, or because they've noticed something that seems uncomfortable for their baby. That might be a preference for turning their head one way, trouble settling, fussiness during feeds, or general tension. Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on approach that looks at how the body moves as a whole, and many parents find it a helpful part of their baby's care alongside their family doctor, midwife or paediatrician.

Osteopathy doesn't replace medical care. If anything we see suggests your baby should be checked by their doctor, we'll tell you.

Before the treatment: a conversation

Your first visit starts with talking. We'll ask about:

  • Pregnancy and birth, including how long labour was and whether any assistance was needed

  • Feeding, sleep and settling

  • Anything you've noticed about how your baby moves, lies or turns

  • What you're hoping to get out of the visit

There are no wrong answers, and you don't need to have anything written down. You know your baby best.

The treatment itself

Treatment for babies is very gentle. It uses light, still holds and soft movement, and it often looks like very little is happening. Many babies stay calm, and plenty fall asleep. Your baby can be on the table, in your arms, or even feeding during the session, whatever keeps them most comfortable.

We work at your baby's pace. If they need a break for a feed, a cuddle or a diaper change, we stop. There's no rush.

After the visit

Some babies are sleepy afterwards and some are more alert. We'll talk you through what you might notice over the next day or two, and whether a follow-up visit makes sense. Some parents come in once, others book a short series. It depends on your baby and what you're seeing at home.

How to prepare

  • Time it around a feed if you can. A baby who's fed and comfortable is usually more settled.

  • Bring what soothes them: a soother, a blanket, or a bottle.

  • Dress them in something easy to open or remove.

  • Leave extra time. Babies don't run on a schedule, and neither do we for these visits.
